With the Clarisonic Mia 2 coming out recently, facial cleansing systems have gained a lot of attention. But Clarisonic is certainly not very budget-friendly for a student like me. I decided to seek for alternatives and there are a lot of positive reviews on the Olay Pro-X Advanced Cleansing System. I bought it from Amazon for $19 ($24 with $5 off coupon). Since my skin has been really dry lately (especially at night), I also got the Olay Age Defying Daily Renewal Cream.
Here’s what I think of them so far:
I used this cleansing system for the first time at night. Before washing my face, I removed my eye makeup with a makeup remover but I didn’t remove my face makeup. I washed my face with some warm water to open up the pores. Then I squirted some of the Olay cleanser that came with the cleansing system and applied it on my face. This cleanser has the exfoliating microbeads in it and it’s very gentle. There are 2 speeds on this cleansing brush and I used the low speed. I applied it to my cheeks for 15 seconds each and my T-zone for about 30 seconds. The brush got a little bit stained from my BB cream and powder. But the stain came right off when I rinsed the brush under running water. My skin felt smoother after my usage and I noticed that the dry patches on my chin (most likely due to my acne spot treatment) are gone. I applied the Olay Age Defying Daily Renewal Cream to moisturize my skin. This is the first time I’m using this product and I find it to be pretty similar to Night of Olay Firming Cream. It’s very hydrating and the fragrance isn’t too noticeable, which I like. The scent kind of reminds me of the moisturizer my mom and grandma used when I was a little kid. It kinda gives me a nostalgic feeling :)
What I’d do differently next time:
- Apply the cleanser on the brush instead of on my face
- Use the brush on my neck - it’s so easy to forget this important part of our body!
I used the cleansing brush again the next morning. This time, I used my normal morning cleanser (Clinique Liquid Soap) and put the cleanser on the brush instead of applying it to my face. The brush does a good job of removing the oil on my face. But I also noticed that the blackheads on the side of my nose are more noticeable. Maybe I have to go through a phase where they become more noticeable before they can be removed? I used a Biore pore strip to get rid of these blackheads.
Overall Rating: 4.5/5
So far I’m pleased with the results. I’ll do an updated post in a month or two to see how it goes on a long term basis. I think I’ll stick with using this once a day at night because my morning skin care regiment is really simple (compare to my evening regiment) and using the brush slows me down. I was happy to see that the dry patches are my skin are gone and it seems like my skin absorbed the moisturizer pretty well. I’d recommend both products to anyone with oily or combination skin. The brush really improves the texture of the skin and it’s very gentle. After I finish my current tube of St. Ives Apricot Scrub, I’ll purchase the full size product of the Olay Pro-X Exfoliating Renewal Cleanser so I can use it with the brush. I didn’t realize how harsh the St. Ives scrub felt until I used this exfoliating cleanser. It doesn’t contain acne medication but it’s very gentle and exfoliates my skin quite well.
A few final points regarding the cleansing system:
- It’s battery-powered: it uses 2 AA batteries. At first, it’s very hard to insert the batteries. I had to google this…. Basically, you hold the device vertically, the brush pointing away from you (on the left), and pull out the right end while wiggling it back and forth.
- The device is water resistant, which means you can take it into the shower with you.
- It’s very light and easy to travel with. But unfortunately there isn’t a travel case. So what I do is store it in a tupperware to prevent the brush head from getting damaged. It fits into those rectangular Glad tupperware.
